The FDA continues to post warnings about chicken treats manufactured in China as the number of animals sickened by such treats rises. (Link here to FDA information) This raises the specter of the Melamine contamination of several foods a few years ago. Before you panic, the numbers are small and the products have been removed from shelves, but with many foods and treats coming from a great many places, it is always good to educate yourself and protect your pets.
How do you as a pet owner protect your pets when choosing food and treats? Here’s a few tips:
1. For pet food, read labels and select products from a known and reputable company. Consult your veterinarian for their recommendations.
2. On foods and particularly on treats, read the label to know the country of origin.
3. Limit treats to those that have an added benefit for your pet, such as Greenies or other dental treats that help to clean teeth and freshen the breath.
4. Contact your veterinarian if you have concerns about how your pet is acting or treats that you have been using.
