Surgery

Whether it is a routine spay or neuter for your puppy or kitten or an involved abdominal exploratory surgery, be assured that your pet’s comfort and safety is always our top priority.

At Park Hill Veterinary Medical Center, we tailor our care to your individual pet’s needs and pre-anesthetic lab work results. We recommend pre-anesthetic blood work for any pet undergoing anesthesia and require it for all pets over age five. We are always learning the newest techniques in anesthesia, surgery, and pain management. It is our goal to always ensure that your pet is safe and as comfortable as possible for whatever procedure performed – ASAP, As Safe As Possible.

During every anesthetic procedure:

  • A certified veterinary nurse will be with your pet at every moment, monitoring all of their anesthetic parameters.
  • Comprehensive anesthetic monitoring includes measurements of heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygen, blood pressure, heart rhythm, and body temperature, whether we’re performing a cat spay or removing a tumor.
  • In almost all cases, anesthetized patients will have an intravenous catheter placed and IV fluids administered throughout the whole procedure. This allows us to safely maintain blood pressure and also have immediate access to your pet’s vein should emergency drugs be needed.
  • Our specially-equipped sterile surgery suite has all of the tools necessary to make sure your pet’s surgery is safe and successful.
  • Pain management and relief are a top consideration. Drugs and therapies like local nerve blocks and IV pain relief infusions will be employed before, during, and after your pet’s procedure to make sure that your pet is as comfortable as possible and as appropriate to their surgical procedure.
  • Comfort and communications – we know it’s unsettling to have your pet in the hospital for even a simple anesthetic surgical procedure. You are welcome to ask as many questions as needed and we will explain all that’s to happen that day when your pet is checked in as well as having detailed after-care instructions when going home. Your pet’s Nurse will keep you updated their care and procedure during the day, and you are always welcome to call to check in.
